Quick Wins for Social Value

quick wins that get results

Sometimes your schools engagement needs a couple of quick tweaks and additions to kickstart results. These are some of the most effective things you can do over a lunchbreak.

Add a call to action

Whatever activity you do for schools has got to lead to something else. Pupils have years of education ahead of them, and they need to know what happens next. And then. And after that. Make sure there's a YouTube video channel they can watch. Or a website they can visit . Or a future activity they can sign up to where you'll be delivering more detail and specifics for them.

Get to know Gatsby, old boy.

The eight Gatsby Benchmarks are the compulsory standards for careers activity in UK schools. Schools will even be judged on their progress towards these during their Ofsted inspection. In short, if you’re not helping them achieve one or more of these, you won’t be invited back.

BENCHMARK 3

Employers and employees

Do this by doing this thing, that thing and the other thing. This doesn’t count. Don’t wasste your time with that. It’s easy but ineffective.

BENCHMARK 5

experience of workplaces

Do this by doing this thing, that thing and the other thing. This doesn’t count. Don’t wasste your time with that. It’s easy but ineffective.

BENCHMARK 6

CAREERS AND CURRICULUM

Do this by doing this thing, that thing and the other thing. This doesn’t count. Don’t wasste your time with that. It’s easy but ineffective.

Understand the Curriculum

What do people who do what you do usually study at school? What are they usually good at? What subjects are prerequisites? What do they study at college or university? Will the new qualifications like Degree Apprenticeships and T-levels get them a job in your company? If you don’t know, they certainly won’t!

Make friends in the space

Your organisation isn’t the only one keen to talk to young peoplein your local area. I guarantee it. And it’s not a no-man’s-land of uncharted activity. There are already people and organisations in the careers space who can shortcut your time and effort down to mere minutes.

Make a plan

Budget, time, resources, outcomes, objectives, partners, metrics. You know what a plan involves. And your schools outreach should have one. Schools are looking for long-term support and commitment from their employer realtionships, and the guidance says all pupils must receive at least one engagement per year. Ad hoc won’t cut it here.

Put it on your website

What kinds of activity do you deliver to schools? Which areas do you cover? What can you talk about? What are your people uniqualy skilled in? So, tell them! When a teacher or Careers Leader is looking for local employers, it’s so easy for them to use their existing network because finding new businessess is hard work. Make it easy and clear for them. Add a page or a section to website being clear about what you offer to schools. You could even add some resources for teachers.
